- To the reader I am not a doctor and this post is from my research about the topic and always consult your doctor to know more about this subject.
Adrenal fatigue is a collections of symptoms or signs known as a “Syndrom”. It stems from the adrenal glands.
The adrenal glands is the triangular-shaped endocrine glands that sits on top of the kidneys. Their main function is to regulate hormones in conjunction with stress and the synthesis of corticosteroids and catecholamines including cortisol and adrenaline (epinephrine).
Adrenal fatigue is most associated with intense or prolonged stress, which is what our body feels after workouts that are hard and intense. If there is no recovery period from your last workout, then you have the risk of developing adrenal fatigue over time. It can also arise during or after prolonged sickness or infections, especially respiratory infections such as influenza, bronchitis and pneumonia.
The cause of adrenal fatigue, is when your adrenal glands for some reason cannot adequately meet the demands of stress. The adrenal glands mobilize your body’s responses to every kind of stress (whether it’s physical, emotional, or psychological) through hormones that regulate energy production and storage, immune function, heart rate, muscle tone, and other processes that enable you to cope with the stress. Whether you have an emotional crisis such as the death of a loved one, a physical crisis such as major surgery, or any type of severe repeated or constant stress in your life, your adrenals have to respond to the stress and maintain homeostasis. If their response is inadequate, you are likely to experience some degree of adrenal fatigue. During adrenal fatigue your adrenal glands function, but not well enough to maintane optimal homeostasis, because their output of regulatory hormones has been diminished, usually by over-stimulation.
In my opinion as a crossfitter it is essential to our health to eat, train and rest the right way for our bodys to function the best way possible. I know that I will have a bad training if I eat wrong, but again as crossfit is described as constantly variate functional movements performed at high intensity. I also believe in mixing things up, so that every day is different. This can be done in many ways and I know some crossfitters are getting more into fasting with their paleo and zone diets. You can find more about crossfit and fasting in the crossfit journal.
