Old School inspiration

I have always been a firm believer in working hard to reach your goals. In training we often forget the importance of practice and patience to reach a certain goal. I found this video and it is a great example of how commitment to what you are doing pays off. When it comes to strength training we often think the “new” is better and that we are inventing new exercises all the time. This video will show you otherwise.

It is amazing to see these guys and they are Paleo all the way. No protein powder just real food.

If you look through www.sandowplus.co.uk you’ll find almost every exercise from today’s era has been performed for longer than you would think. Old School Rocks!!!

The new Kstar blog

As the mobility geek that I am I wanted to share a new blog that our very own Crossfit mobility star, Kelly Starrett has made. The purpose of the blog is to teach people how important mobility is for our training and recovery. Now having taken Kellys cert and worked with him on my own issues, I can only say this guy is a genius. Not only does he know everything about mobility and the body, he is also one of the nieces and funniest guys I have ever meet.

I will be working with Kelly again in the future, but for now i will enjoy his blog http://www.mobilitywod.blogspot.com/

Hope you all enjoy it and realize how important stretching the body really is for our performance.

Off you go and stretch :-)

Mixed Martial Arts in Ontario

It seams that a strong fraction of medical doctors here in Ontario, Canada is calling for a ban for all Mixed Martial Arts events. The reason they say is that the sport is not safe for the athletes and that they are at risk of brain damaged.

Interestingly enough we had the same debate back in Denmark before I left to live in Toronto.  It seams that from an outsider the sport of Mixed Martial Arts looks very brutal. So far all the people I have heard talk about how dangerously the sport is, have still to come up with some solid evidence that it is an unsafe sport. Doctors argue that MMA participants have a higher risk of brain injuries then in other sports? How many times in a MMA fight is the athlete hit or kicked to the head? Many of the fights in the UFC end on the ground in some type of submission and if they end in a KO, the referee will stop the fight.

I have been doing martial arts for many years and I have been training with some of todays MMA fighters such as my hometown boy and UFC fighter Martin Kampmann. These guys train their asses off for their fights, they do strength training, plyometrics, cardio training, wresling, Bjj, boxing, kicking drills etc. They are real athletes like the players in the NFL, NHL or any other professional sport.

They argument that MMA is more dangerous then boxing, kick-boxing, Thai boxing, Hockey, American football, Rugby even Soccer is complete nonsense in my opinion and comes out of pure ignorance to the sport of MMA.

I hope that with time these doctors will go and do the research and that we can have an end to this discussion once and for all for the sake of our sport.

Adrenal Fatiuge

Here is my new post, this time about adrenal fatiuge, someting many people have without even knowing it and is by some regarded as a hoax.

- To the reader I am not a doctor and this post is from my research about the topic and always consult your doctor to know more about this subject.

Adrenal fatigue is a collections of symptoms or signs known as a “Syndrom”. It stems from the adrenal glands.

The adrenal glands is the triangular-shaped endocrine glands that sits on top of the kidneys. Their main function is to regulate hormones in conjunction with stress and the synthesis of  corticosteroids and catecholamines including cortisol and adrenaline (epinephrine).

Adrenal fatigue is most associated with intense or prolonged stress, which is what our body feels after workouts that are hard and intense. If there is no recovery period from your last workout, then you have the risk of developing adrenal fatigue over time. It can also arise during or after prolonged sickness or infections, especially respiratory infections such as influenza, bronchitis and pneumonia.

The cause of adrenal fatigue, is when your adrenal glands for some reason cannot adequately meet the demands of stress. The adrenal glands mobilize your body’s responses to every kind of stress (whether it’s physical, emotional, or psychological) through hormones that regulate energy production and storage, immune function, heart rate, muscle tone, and other processes that enable you to cope with the stress. Whether you have an emotional crisis such as the death of a loved one, a physical crisis such as major surgery, or any type of severe repeated or constant stress in your life, your adrenals have to respond to the stress and maintain homeostasis. If their response is inadequate, you are likely to experience some degree of adrenal fatigue. During adrenal fatigue your adrenal glands function, but not well enough to maintane optimal homeostasis, because their output of regulatory hormones has been diminished, usually by over-stimulation.

In my opinion as a crossfitter it is essential to our health to eat, train and rest the right way for our bodys to function the best way possible.  I know  that I will have a bad training if I eat wrong, but again as crossfit is described as constantly variate functional movements performed at high intensity. I also believe in mixing things up, so that every day is different. This can be done in many ways and I know some crossfitters are getting more into fasting with their paleo and zone diets.  You can find more about crossfit and fasting in the crossfit journal.

I would like to share a very good link to some very good information about nutrition, ADHD, Celiac disease and much more the link is here

Overtraining

Wow what a day here in Toronto, it is freakish hot….

I’ve been reading a lot of blog from fellow crossfitters and I always love to read and see new stuff come up.  I found this awsome post from Crossfit South Bay about overtraining, so I wanted to share this with you guys.

http://www.crossfitsouthbay.com/2010/07/overtraining/

On thing I know from myself is that when I train a lot, here I mean two to three Wods a day, plus martial arts training. I don’t always pay attention to why my body is getting so tired. This article will tell you more about why you get tired and how to keep your body working for you and not against you.

My upcoming post will be about adrenal fatigue, which is something I know a lot of people struggle with. Until then…..

The 2010 Crossfit Games is on this weekend

Finally after a year of waiting, the next Crossfit Games event is on this weekend at The Home Depot Center in Carson, California. This year the event is bigger then ever, and it is going to be exciting to see, who the fittest person on this planet is going to be.

You can watch the event live here

I’m really looking forward to see how my Canadian hero James (OPT) Fitzgerald is going to do in this event.  He has some strong competition from Chis Spealler (hero of them all..), Jason Khalipa winner of CF games 2008 and Mikko Salo winner of CF games 2009. I know that Kelly Starrett has be working hard with Jason Khalipa and that will for sure have improved Khalipa’s skills a lot for these games,  so watch out for this beast this year.

You can also follow the Crossfit Games twits here

This is by far the biggest and best event for the Crossfit community and for the future of Crossfit. This will only get bigger and better year after year. I’m sure The Crossfit HQ staff has some interesting workouts for this year Games.

Best of luck to all the athletes, in my mind you are all winners just for signing up for the Games.

Weekends certs

This weekend was properly the best training and learning experience in an long time for me.  Saturday was all about recovery and mobility with San Francisco Crossfit Kelly Starrett. Here we learned about improving athlete joint, tissue, and muscle mobility and flexibility. Bettering the ideal position and best-fit orthopedic movement set-up. Kelly is an amazing person and truly inspirational. I learned so much about human movement from him over this weekend and how to better address my own problems on workouts.

Sunday and Monday it was all about Crossfit Football. When I arrived at Crossfit Colloseum at 8 am in the morning and first saw John Welbourn I felt like a midget compared to this huge man. John and his team started out by explaining why Crossfit Football, which laid the foundation for the rest of the day. Raphael Ruiz took us through some warm-up and dynamic stretching drills. After that we started to do agility work and resistant band runs. After a quick break Max Mormont started to coach us through the different squats. In teams we had to find our 3 rep max of back squat. After we all found our max back squat, it was time for the first WOD of the weekend. It was a really nasty one too. It was 9-6-3 of deadlift, resistent band runs and pull ups. Deadlift was with 335 punds rx’ed. We started in teams of two one doing the wod and the other one counting the reps. First I would do 9 Deadlifts, then one 20 yard resistant band run, 9 pull-ups. The 6 Deadlift, two 20 yard resistant band runs, 6 pull-ups. Then 3 Deadlifts, 3 resistant band runs and 3 pull ups. I did it in 7 something minutes and I was completely dead. It looks easy on paper, but doing it was way harder then I thought. After the Wod we would stretch and then go for lunch.

Fast forward to Monday, we started out by warming up, and doing NFL Combine drills and theory. Raph took us through a series of agility runs, skips and sprints. We run forward, backwards, changed directions. After that Max took us through how to do the Clean and the power clean. Here we talked about breath, grip and midline stabilization. The again it was time for a WOD. I can’t remember the time setup but we would work and then pause and then work again. We did hip stabilization drill, cone runs and clean and jerk. This was a really nice Wod and not as taxing on the respiratory system as the wod the day before.

All I can say about this cert is that I am so humble to learn from such great coaches. All these guys know so much about training, diet, stretching, human performance that it blew my mind. I never met a group of people that was so inspirational, professional and nice to be around as the Crossfit Football team. I can only hope to learn much more from these people in the future. Thank you so much guys I will never forget, what you have tough me.

Crossfit Football Cert

Rest day and Crossfit Certs

Another amazing day here in Toronto with very nice weather.  The weekend holds two Crossfit certs for me. Tomorrow I will be attending Crossfit Mobility and Recovery with Kelly Starrett, from Crossfit San Francisco. Kelly is one of the people that I have long wished to meet and learn from. Especially because I worked with Cranial Sacral therapy with my athletes in Denmark . His focus is on how to improve athletes and their mobility and flexibility for a given workout.

Sunday and Monday will will be my first introduction to Crossfit Football with former NFL star John Welbourn and crew. This cert  is something that I have been waiting for in a long time. I know it will be a really interesting and hard cert with many eye openers.  I will be posting some pictures from both certs if I have time.

Today is my rest day, so no workout for me today. I will be digging into the CF Football material and take some notes while I enjoy the beautiful weather and a nice paleo meal.
