UFC 121 this Saturday

This Saturday the UFC 121 event is being held, and what a fight card this time.

My homeboy Martin “The Hitman” Kampmann is facing Jake Shields in an epic battle for a title shot.  Kampmann and me are from the same city in Denmark, and I have had the pleasure of training with him of different occasions.  Not only is he an amazing fighter, he is also a very down to earth guy kind of guy. Hopefully he will win this fight and get a shot at the title.

There are so many amazing fighters on this fightcard and the Lesnar vs. Velasquez is going to be a real treat. I know Lesnar will put up a good fight, but I think Velasquez has a good chance of winning this fight. I might be one of the few people that actually admires Lesnar. A guys his size and with his skills how can’t you admire him.  He is a showman and that is maybe why people dislike him. I still think that Velasquez has a good chance of winning, but I would love to be wrong on this.

Tito Ortiz vs. Matt Hamill is going to be an interesting fight for sure. This is the first fight for Tito in a long time and the first after his back surgery. Depending on how Tito feels and performs, I would bet the fight to go to Matt Hamill.

I also can’t wait to see my canadaian fighters Sam Stout and Patrick Cote. They are both really good fighters with there unique strengts, so it is going to be some interesting fights.

The fight between Diego Sanchez and Paulo Thiago is a really good fight and I think it could go both ways.

I cannot wait for this event. I am so excited about this fight card.

Hopefully next year Dana White will start arranging Canadian events for all the Canadian UFC fans here.

Mixed Martial Arts in Ontario

It seams that a strong fraction of medical doctors here in Ontario, Canada is calling for a ban for all Mixed Martial Arts events. The reason they say is that the sport is not safe for the athletes and that they are at risk of brain damaged.

Interestingly enough we had the same debate back in Denmark before I left to live in Toronto.  It seams that from an outsider the sport of Mixed Martial Arts looks very brutal. So far all the people I have heard talk about how dangerously the sport is, have still to come up with some solid evidence that it is an unsafe sport. Doctors argue that MMA participants have a higher risk of brain injuries then in other sports? How many times in a MMA fight is the athlete hit or kicked to the head? Many of the fights in the UFC end on the ground in some type of submission and if they end in a KO, the referee will stop the fight.

I have been doing martial arts for many years and I have been training with some of todays MMA fighters such as my hometown boy and UFC fighter Martin Kampmann. These guys train their asses off for their fights, they do strength training, plyometrics, cardio training, wresling, Bjj, boxing, kicking drills etc. They are real athletes like the players in the NFL, NHL or any other professional sport.

They argument that MMA is more dangerous then boxing, kick-boxing, Thai boxing, Hockey, American football, Rugby even Soccer is complete nonsense in my opinion and comes out of pure ignorance to the sport of MMA.

I hope that with time these doctors will go and do the research and that we can have an end to this discussion once and for all for the sake of our sport.
